How does shading change a solar proposal?

Shade from trees, parapets, nearby buildings and rooftop equipment changes across the day and year. It can reduce sunlight on modules and create additional electrical mismatch within a string. A simple roof area measurement cannot capture that effect.

What to request

  • A site survey or measured shade analysis for the proposed array area.
  • Module layout and string design showing affected zones.
  • Separate assumptions for soiling, wiring, availability and shading losses.
  • An explanation of whether module-level power electronics improve the specific layout.

NREL’s PVWatts documentation treats shading as part of system losses and advises increasing the assumption where nearby obstructions exist. The AxiaSolar estimate lets you change aggregate loss, but it does not model each object or string. Use a detailed design for final yield estimates.
