Solar output is lower than expected: where to start?

Compare like with like before diagnosing a fault. Monthly output changes with weather, season and operating conditions. Use the monitoring record, local solar resource and original design estimate over the same period.

Safe first checks

  • Confirm the meter or monitoring system is recording correctly and note inverter alerts.
  • Check whether a grid outage, curtailment or planned maintenance affected output.
  • Compare recent shade, soiling or snow conditions with the original assumptions.
  • Escalate repeated trips, fault codes or visible damage to a qualified technician.

Electrical inspection and testing belong to trained personnel. The US Department of Energy recommends monitoring output and investigating root causes rather than repeatedly resetting a tripped system. Keep an O&M record and equipment list to speed diagnosis.
